A plan of action to address hunger
We’ve developed a five-point plan to address both the immediate hunger needs in the community and to address the emerging issues revealed by the pandemic.
1.) Ensure families have the resources to buy the food they need.
- Increase SNAP benefits by 15% for eligible families.
2.) Identify and transform the systemic issues that have created income disparities and inequitable access to food.
- Work in partnership with community organizations to advocate for policy solutions that address the root causes of hunger including poverty, income inequality and racial disparities.
- Support small, local growers and BIPOC farmers to earn a living wage and be part of the food security solution.
- Support local food retailers to ensure access to affordable and culturally appropriate food for all regardless of where you live.
3.) Fill the school meal gap and ensure that kids continue have access to food.
- Continue P-EBT support for families through the next school year.
- Increase community eligibility for high-poverty schools to offer breakfast and lunch at no charge to all students
4. ) Help local food shelves feed their communities.
- Provide additional round of state funding to the emergency food system so they can best address local, community need.
- Support emerging popup distributions in high-need Twin Cities neighborhoods.
5.) Invest in transportation for food delivery and mobile food shelves. This is needed to meet the immediate crisis and prepare for an aging demographic in Minnesota.
