• walmart’s associate choice program

Hunger Solutions Minnesota is selected as one of three Minnesota non-profits for Walmart’s Associate Choice Program

Walmart offers a program where associates vote to select a charity in their state to receive either $50,000, $20,000 or $10,000.

We are pleased that Walmart has chosen HSM as a finalist because our mission aligns so closely with the Walmart commitment to fight hunger.

Child Hunger on the rise in Minnesota

One in 5 children in Minnesota faces hunger or food insecurity. This means that the child does not always receive three meals a day or sometimes is forced to skip meals. Much of this happens on the weekends or the evening meal and during summer vacation. This food insecurity leads to developmental and academic challenges for a growing child. Nutrition is vital for for proper brain develoment. Chronic life-long illnesses can develop in childhood when there are diet deficiencies. The rates of hunger can be attributed to increased rates of poverty. The child poverty rate in Minnesota has risen in the past decade from 110,000 children in 2000 to 200,000 children living at or below the poverty line in 2010.

See our fact sheet for more details.

How does it work?

Walmart and Sam’s Club associates will have the ability to vote for their pick during an online poll conducted in June 30-August 6. Each associate will have one vote.
