Demonstrate Nonprofit Power on February 14th with the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits

capitolMCN is convening a Nonprofit Day at the Capitol on February 14 to provide nonprofits and legislators with an opportunity to discuss threats to the tax exempt status of nonprofits. As you may know, a Minnesota Supreme Court decision made in December narrowed the definition of “organizations of purely public charity,” severely limiting sales property tax exemptions for nonprofits.

By joining with MCN on February 14th, you will be part of the launch of MCN’s statewide advocacy effort to pass a bill to ensure that no single factor determines nonprofit tax exemption. Your voice is needed, whether your nonprofit is directly affected or not. When nonprofits stand together on issues that impact all components of the sector, we can be a voice that ensures that nonprofits are valued and that threats to our ability to fully serve our constituencies and communities are defeated.

Nonprofit Day at the Capitol starts at 1 p.m. on the 14th at the Capitol in St. Paul—register now for this free event at http://www.mncn.org/event_policy.htm#Nonprofit.

Afterwards, at the Kelly Inn, located right by the Capitol, you are invited to MCN’s Legislative Reception. Here you can mingle with state legislators, your peers, and MCN staff. You can help lay an important foundation for the 2008 session, and strengthen our bonds as a sector working to improve Minnesota. The reception starts at 4 p.m., and hot appetizers, beer and wine will be served. Entrance to this event is $10, and scholarships are available. For more information and register for the fun, visit http://www.mncn.org/event_policy.htm#Legislative.

You can further learn about legislator’s priorities for 2008 on February 15 at MCN’s Session Line Up, where legislators will formally speak to a nonprofit audience about their priorities and issues. This free event does require you to register, and you can do so here: http://www.mncn.org/event_policy.htm#Session.
