Bare Arrowhead Food Shelves to Get Help
Working families and children struggle through holiday season
ST PAUL, MN – December 7, 2007 – As jobs are cut, wages remain stagnant, home foreclosures reach record highs and food prices skyrocket, food shelves are the first to witness the realities of a stressed economy. According to Hunger Solutions Minnesota, there has been a 50% statewide increase in food shelf visits over the last 6 years.
State Senator Tom Bakk (DFL-Cook), is responding to the need of the food shelves in his Arrowhead district by attending a fund raising reception; with all of the proceeds going to shelves that serve northeast Minnesota families.
“Everything from higher gas and fuel-oil prices to a slowing economy has doubled the demand at food shelves in some places,” said Bakk. “This fundraiser is one way folks can help out, and the initial donations have just been tremendous. This is going to be a big help for a lot of people up north,” Bakk added.
Thomson West, Flint Hills Resources, Target and Microsoft will sponsor the reception called “Stock the Shelves”. The event is on Monday, December 10 at 4-6 pm at THE LIFFEY – 175 WEST 7TH STREET – SAINT PAUL, MN 55102 (Located on the bottom of the Holiday Inn – kitty corner from Xcel Energy Center)
“As one of Minnesota’s largest employers, Thomson West is pleased to support the replenishment of the food shelves,” said Rick King, executive vice president and chief operations officer for Eagan-based Thomson West. “People are the source of energy for our business and we are happy to team with Senator Bakk and give something back to fellow Minnesotans.”
Food shelves up north are struggling to keep up with demand. Your contribution will allow the shelves to provide more food for holiday meals and other essentials. When families struggle with choices on how to allocate their limited funds, too often nutrition becomes restricted.
Donations will be accepted. Every dollar donated can help the food shelves purchase 5 meals worth of food to stock for needy people. Event sponsors have already committed over $25,000 in donations.
The event also has additional help from Cleveland-Cliffs, Walgreens, and Lockridge Grindal Nauen P.L.L.P. The Liffey is donating the space and food.
