AT&T MINNESOTA JOINS “SHARE OUR STRENGTH” TO FIGHT
CHILDHOOD HUNGER THROUGH TEXT-DONATION PROGRAMText-Donation Program Allows Mobile Users to Help Feed Millions of Children
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 29, 2009 — In response to President Barack Obama’s recent call for all Americans to participate in public service and his commitment to end childhood hunger by 2015, employees of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) are actively supporting a new initiative in the fight against childhood hunger.
The initiative is a text-donation program that encourages wireless phone users, including AT&T customers, to donate to Share Our Strength via their mobile phones. Share Our Strength, a national organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger, provides grants and other support to local hunger-relief organizations across the country.
Individuals and volunteer organization also are encouraged to launch food drives to benefit local food banks or take other steps to help address childhood hunger in their communities.
Text SHARE to Contribute
From now until March 1, AT&T wireless customers can donate $5 to Share Our Strength by simply texting the word “SHARE” to 20222 on their mobile device. AT&T will match text donations for a total contribution up to $100,000.
The national text-donation initiative is a coordinated effort between Share Our Strength and the Mobile Giving Foundation, a nonprofit wireless industry organization. Donations will be used to help provide food for the 12.4 million children at risk of hunger in America and will help address the recent increase in traffic at food banks across the country.
“We can offer resources including our vast network of wireless subscribers and the volunteer efforts of our 300,000 employees, the support of the Communications Workers of America, and dedicated AT&T Pioneers to help eliminate childhood hunger,” said Bob Bass, president of AT&T Minnesota. “Every wireless customer can make up to five text donations before March 1. In addition, we encourage Minnesotans to consider how they can support groups such as Hunger Solutions Minnesota, which is a local leader in the fight on childhood hunger.”
“We’re pleased that AT&T and Share Our Strength are working to help combat childhood hunger,” said Colleen Moriarty, Executive Director of Hunger Solutions Minnesota. “Nearly 10 percent of Minnesotans are food insecure or hungry. In 2008, a record number of families visited Minnesota food shelves. Growing numbers of middle-class families and their children are experiencing hunger because of job layoffs, home foreclosures and medical bills. The immediate and long-term impacts of childhood hunger are detrimental to the entire fabric of our state. As Minnesota families are increasingly struggling to make ends meet, programs such as this are vitally important.”
“Charitable groups often are the first to feel the effect of an economic downturn,” said State Senator Tom Bakk, “so it’s especially important that the people of our state respond now, when even more people are in need.”
