Congratulations to the newest additions to the growing list of HSM Blue Ribbon Food Shelves:

We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of TEFAP products that should start to trickle in to Minnesota starting this month. By October we should happily be facing a full force deluge of product, as 88 truckloads are anticipated between now and year end. Click here to read more. Supplemental State Grants to Be Distributed in the Next Week
Grant awards for the Suplemental 2008 State Grants have been determined and will be distributed by September 19th. These are the additional funds that Hunger Solutions advocated for on behalf of the food shelves at the state legislature, and with the strong support of Representatives John Benson and Karen Clark, were able to secure. This was the first additional funding secured from the state since the inception of state funding to food shelves. Click here to read more. Food Support Update September 2008
In 2007, the Minnesota Legislature passed a law requiring the Department of Human Services, in consultation with counties and advocates, to develop a new application form and process for the Food Support program. Click here to read more. Venison Update September 2008
The Minnesota Hunter Harvested Venison Donation Program allows Minnesota deer hunters to donate deer carcasses to food banks, food shelves and feeding programs. This program, which is a cooperative effort between the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), provides an excellent source of protein to people in need while helping reduce local deer populations. In 1983, Margaret Ellen “Babe” Moritz took over the Emily Food Shelf in north central Minnesota. As the Director, she volunteered at the food shelf for over twenty years, serving her community with kindness and generosity based on her deep desire to help others. Babe lost her battle with cancer in 2006 but her spirit continues to motivate the Emily Food Shelf volunteers. Click here to read more. September is Hunger Action Month!
Hunger Action Month is an opportunity to engage in the fight against domestic hunger. Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest) and its 205 member food banks will host events across the United States that directly benefit hunger-relief efforts. Years of research says it does. In fact, children who eat breakfast are better learners. Adults who eat well are more productive employees. With good nutrition, seniors stay in their homes longer and have lower medical bills. In short, the better we eat, the better we feel and live. Unfortunately, people with limited resources often run short of food at the end of the month – or don’t realize they could make better choices at the store or good use of the food they bring home.
