HSM Agency Highlight August 2009

In April of 1988, an anti-hunger workshop was held in International Falls and was facilitated by Jim Dwyer of the Duluth Hunger Coalition. Several people attending the workshop wanted to do more to meet the needs of the hungry in Koochiching county. This thoughtful group of people came together and wrote the grants necessary to start the Falls Hunger Coalition’s food shelf. Click here to read more.

HSM Grants Update August 2009

We are pleased to announce that the first distribution of Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless summer food grants will be distributed by August 15th. As in previous years, we will be distributing the funds in two distributions as funds become available. Expect to see the first half of your total grant in mid-August. Click here to read more.

TEFAP Update August 2009

The TEFAP product continues to stream into the state. Close to one million pounds per month are scheduled to deliver into Minnesota through November. It’s anticipated that except for December, the state will continue to take delivery of an average of a million pounds per month of TEFAP product through summer 2010. Click here to read more.

HSM and other Minnesota Hunger Partners continue to work diligently to keep the issue of hunger in Minnesota at the forefront of media reports. Free Bridge to Benefits Conference

Bridge to Benefits is a multi-state project by Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) to improve the well-being of families and individuals by linking them to public work support programs and tax credits. Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless is responding to the current economic challenges by offering limited time gap funding to agencies that have experienced an unexpected loss of funding. MinnesotaHelp.info® is a free, web-based way for caregivers, human/social service processionals, and the public to find information about services for older adults, people with disabilities, veterans, and people with low-income. HSM Board Member Highlight August 2009

Nancy Anderson is Executive Director of the Falls Hunger Coalition, a non-profit organization based in International Falls that annually provides more than 147,000 pounds of food to almost 3500 families living near the Minnesota/Canada border. In addition to the Hunger Solutions Minnesota board, Nancy serves on HSM’s Food Shelf Advisory Committee (FSAC). Click here to read more.

    A newly-released national report ranks Minnesota near the top in child well-being; however, Children’s Defense Fund-Minnesota (CDF) officials cautioned that the findings of the national KIDS COUNT Data Book leave reasons for concern. Some of the trends found in the survey, including a steep rise in child poverty since 2000, should give policy makers in Minnesota and across the country reason to act, CDF officials said.
