Putting Healthy Food Within Reach

  • Call The Minnesota Food HelpLine (1-888-711-1151) if you or anyone you know does not have enough food. This HelpLine will help enroll persons that qualify for SNAP and help callers find emergency food assistance close to their home. SNAP is the new name for Food Stamps or Food Support as it is known in Minnesota.

  • The Food Support Program/SNAP helps you and your family have healthy, tasty food options more choices and more consumer buying power. The new system using a debit card that is uses the same scanner at checkout like a credit card or a bank debit card.

We offer You Easy Food Support Eligibility Screening
When you call, you will be quickly be screened for eligibility for the Food Support/SNAP program using the online Bridge to Benefits developed by Children’s Defense Fund – Minnesota.

Myths and Facts

There are many myths about the Food Support/SNAP Program and the benefits. Here are the facts to clear up the wrong information.

  • MYTH: People cannot own a home or be in the process of buying
    a home to be eligible for SNAP.
  • FACT: Individuals may own or buy a home and still receive SNAP.
    The home and its lot are not considered a resource, and the program does not require anyone to sign away their home.
  • MYTH: Senior households (age 60+) must re-certify for SNAP
    benefits every three months.
  • FACT: If all adult household members are senior or disabled, the current certification period is 24 months.
  • MYTH: If I own a car, I am not eligible for SNAP.
  • FACT: Vehicles are not counted as an asset when applying for
    SNAP. In Minnesota, the asset limit for SNAP is $7,000.
  • MYTH: If I apply, I need to fill out paperwork every month to
    stay on the program.
  • FACT: In 2009, Minnesota moved to six month reporting for
    SNAP. This report is used to continue program eligibility
    and benefit amount.
  • MYTH: Most people only receive $10 a month.
    New minimum benefit effective 04/01/09 is $16 a month.
  • FACT: Statistics in 2008 show: the average benefit per household,per month is $154. The average benefit per household,
    per month for those 60 and older is $76.
