A Message From Our Director

Congratulations and thank you for the successful passage of the extra $500,000 in food shelf state funding and a markedly improved Farm Bill. The state funding is scheduled to be distributed to Minnesota food shelves sometime later this summer. Learn more about how the new Farm Bill affects Minesota TEFAP Commodities in our TEFAP Update article.

Please, mark you calendars and join us on Thursday, July 17th, 2008 for a lively, new HSM event. Hunger Solutions Minnesota is pleased to announce the inaugural HSM Member Resource Fair & Voice of Hunger Rally taking place at Black Bear Crossings on Como Lake in St. Paul. Specially selected vendors will present interactive displays; you will have a chance to “Speed Date” with key media and lawmakers and participate in an olde time rally.

The rally will launch our new VOICE OF HUNGER Advocates Network. You are advocates for hungry Minnesotans every day when you provide service, run news stories, conduct Minnesota FoodShare and other drives, and share your stories at community events. This network will enable you to leverage the hunger story in a way that motivates decision-makers to take supportive action on state and national hunger policy issues. We need to raise our voices to a new level and keep hunger issues on the front burner year-round.

A very special guest will kick off this exciting movement at our rally. George McGovern, the former senator from South Dakota, and World War II Bomber Pilot, will discuss the ongoing struggle to end hunger. Defining hunger as a political condition, McGovern discusses that it is a greater moral imperative than ever before because for the first time, humanity has the tools and the knowledge to defeat hunger. It is an honor to welcome him to Minnesota and introduce him to our community.

See you on the 17th!
