Volunteering is much easier if you work for a cause that you’re passionate about. Give some thought to the concerns which hold your attention over and over again, whether it be “hunger,” or “advocacy for the poor,” or “the treatment of immigrants.”
Often you can find something you like to do and enhance skills at the same time. Want to write a book someday; you could edit a newsletter. Do you want more exercise in your life; you could unload the truck at the food shelf. Volunteering can add dimensions life that can lead you in new directions. It can also be a way to meet wonderful, caring people who are passionate about similar issues.

While volunteering is an important part of life, you need to maintain a manageable schedule. Don’t volunteer for more than is comfortable. If the project needs more help, bring a friend and you can work together.
