Protect & strengthen SNAP

Debate on the Farm Bill and the SNAP program is picking up steam in Washington. Last week, the Farm Bill conference committee held their first hearing to work out the differences between the House- and Senate-passed Farm Bills. And there are just a few Legislative days left before the current Farm Bill expires on Sept. 30.

Today we’re joining with groups across the country for a national SNAP call-in day. Make 3 quick calls to you elected officials TODAY to let them know that you support protecting and strengthening the SNAP program for the 600,000 Minnesotans who use the program to put food on the table.

Making calls is easy. We’ve even put together a sample message for your elected (but feel free to make your message your own). Here’s how you do it:

  1. Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your elected official. (Find out who represents you here)
  2. When you are connected to your elected official’s office, let them know who you are and what you want them to do on SNAP. We’ve put together a sample for each of them below.
  3. After you hang up with the first office, dial the switchboard again to be connected to your next elected. You will make 3 calls total:

a.    Your Congressperson
b.    Senator Klobuchar
c.    Senator Smith

Rep. Walz (MN-01)

“My name is ___ and I’m calling from ______. I want to thank Congressman Walz for his remarks on SNAP and the nutrition title at the Farm Bill conference committee hearing. I agree, how we act on the nutrition title demonstrates our moral character. As someone who works with people who use SNAP, I know how critical the program is in helping families put food on the table. The cuts to SNAP in the House version of the bill would be devastating to the people we serve and I want to urge him to continue to fight the proposed cuts to the program. Thank you.”
